Researchers

Florian Block (Postdoctoral Fellow)

Florian has just finished his PhD Thesis titled “Reimagining Graphical User Interface Ecologies”. His background is in Human Computer Interaction, and he equally enjoys designing, implementing and evaluating new interactive systems. Florian’s work so far has focused on exploring novel and compelling forms of interacting with graphical interfaces. His work at SDR Lab will concentrate on the use of novel multi-touch technology to create highly interactive and engaging museum exhibits that enable visitors to playfully acquire understanding of important concepts of evolutionary biology.

Brenda Caldwell Phillips (Postdoctoral Fellow)

Brenda is a research psychologist. She is interested in how children and adults acquire knowledge about – and an appreciation for – living things via informal learning activities and direct engagement with the natural world. Her work also includes the study of language and the acquisition of early artifact concepts. Brenda is also interested in how contextual factors, such as living in poverty or having limited access to natural and/or educational resources, influence learning and human mental health. As a member of LOE, Brenda is developing methods to facilitate learning about biological kinds via the use of interactive, multi-touch tables in museum settings.

Yongqiang (Visiting PhD Student)

Yongqiang is a fourth year Ph.D. candidate from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. He has good experience in designing and implementing large-scale multi-touch table (uTable ) and presented his work at ITS 2011. He has great interest in multi-user collaboration on interactive surfaces. His work at SDR Lab will concentrate on the maintaining and further development of FloTree, as well as exploring meaningful gestural interfaces at the SDR Lab as an intern.

Novall Khan (Research Assistant)

Novall’s research interests are in learning & memory in the context of affective neuroscience. As a Clinical Research Interviewer at Emory Psychiatry, she became interested in understanding how affective networks shape our perception of the world, and how emotion plays a role in memory formation. She is also interested in evaluating tools and technologies—particularly those that utilize a UDL-framework—which facilitate engagement in learning and enhance memory. Novall has an Ed.M. in Mind, Brain, & Education, and a B.S. in Brain & Cognitive Sciences.

Nan Xin (Research Assistant)

Nan is a biological science researcher by training. In addition to primary research in biology, she has also been engaged in various teaching activities, which inspired her interest in the art and science of education. She is now expanding her horizons to developmental psychology research and science education. Nan is particularly interested in studying how children acquire scientific knowledge. She would also like to investigate the interactions between biological processes and learning, with the goal of assisting children to pursue healthy and adaptive lives as adults.

Xi Chen (Visiting Scholar)

Xi Chen’s interests are in non-contact human-computer interaction. As an associate professor in the School of Mechantronics Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology, China, Xi has great interested in developing a novel Human-Computer interface using the induced electrostatic signals generated by human hand motion via the electrostatic sensor array linked to the computer. Her research mainly focuses on the electrostatic sensor array design to realize the orientation and location of the hand, as well as the assorting of the hand motion based on its characteristics, the definition of operation, and a natural, smooth human-computer interaction pattern.
